The bowl game is set for Thursday, December 27, at RFK Stadium in the nation's capitol. Game time is 3:00 p.m. (EST) with ESPN providing live television coverage.
In the Military Bowl's five-year history, San Jose State (10-2, 5-1 WAC) is the first team to bring a BCS standing to the bowl at the time of its acceptance.
"We are thrilled to receive an invitation to play in the 2012 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman to cap off one of the best seasons in the 110-plus years of San Jose State football," says San Jose State athletics director Gene Bleymaier. "We finished a 10-win season with signature wins over bowl-eligible teams BYU and Louisiana Tech on national TV and look forward to playing a quality opponent on December 27.
"Among our 150,000-plus alumni base around the world, we have a solid core of successful graduates and former players living on the East Coast and in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. A number of them came to our win at Navy in September and we look forward to seeing them again."
The Spartans finished the regular season with a six-game winning streak and return to the Washington D.C. metropolitan area with four victories over bowl eligible teams. One of those wins was the 12-0 shutout at Navy in nearby Annapolis, Md.
One of the best road teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) this season winning five of six, San Jose State is the only FBS team in 2012 with a road victory in the four continental U.S. time zones.
Mike MacIntyre, completing his third season in his first head coaching position in his 23 seasons of college and professional coaching, is San Jose State's head coach. MacIntyre is one of 16 finalists for the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia Collegiate Coach of the Year Award.
"This is exciting news for San Jose State, this football program and, in particular, our seniors, our fans, our alumni, our students, our conference and the city of San Jose. This team accomplished so much in so many ways this season and now we have another an opportunity to continue to our season in the Military Bowl," says MacIntyre. "We have a chance to win 11 games. The last time that was at San Jose State here was before World War II and our players, coaches and staff are ready to get started."
The Spartans will bring a team that scored 423 points, the third-highest scoring team in school history. San Jose State is the most accurate passing team in the FBS completing 71.3 percent of its passes for 33 touchdowns to date. Junior David Fales is the Spartans' record-setting quarterback and he has four targets - wide receivers Noel Grigsby, Chandler Jones and Jabari Carr and tight end Ryan Otten, each with more than 1,000 career pass receiving yards.
The well-rounded San Jose State team has a defense that is ranked in the top-10 nationally presently in turnovers gained (7th tied), fumbles recovered (1st tied) and quarterback sacks (5th). The Spartans are 25th in scoring defense allowing 21.4 points a game.
The Spartans bring a 5-3 all-time bowl record to the 2012 Military Bowl. San Jose State has victories in its last two bowl appearances - a 20-12 triumph over New Mexico in the 2006 New Mexico Bowl and a 48-24 victory over Central Michigan in the 1990 California Raisin Bowl.
