Tech going to WAC baseball tournament

Seeds Set for 2012 WAC Baseball Tournament

DENVER--The WAC's regular season concluded Sunday and the seeds are now set for the upcoming WAC Baseball Tournament in Mesa Ariz.

The tournament, which takes place at Hohokam Stadium May 23-26/27 in Mesa, Ariz., will feature the league's top six teams from the regular season.

New Mexico State earned the tournament's top seed and will received a bye into the second day of competition. Sacramento State will be the No. 2 seed and will also receive a bye into the tournament's second day.

Nevada is the No. 3 seed, followed by Hawai‘i (No. 4), Fresno State (No. 5) and Louisiana Tech (No. 6).

The tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 23 with No. 4 Hawai‘i taking on No. 5 Fresno State at 3 p.m. (PT). No. 3 Nevada will play No. 6 Louisiana Tech in the nightcap Wednesday at 7 p.m.

New Mexico State 15, San Jose State 2 (7)

San Jose, CALIF. – (NMSU Media Relations) The New Mexico State baseball team has earned a share of the regular season WAC title with a 15-2 win over San Jose State, Sunday afternoon, in seven innings of play. This is the Aggies’ first regular season WAC title in school history and the program’s first conference title since 2002.

The Aggies finish the regular season at 35-20 and 11-7 in WAC play. NM State shares the regular season title with Sacramento State and Nevada. The Aggies enters the 2012 WAC Baseball Championships, May 23-27, in Mesa, Ariz., as the No. 1 seed, followed by Sacramento State as the No. 2 seed and Nevada at No. 3.

Louisiana Tech 5, Fresno State 2

Fresno, Calif. -(LT Media Relations)  A two-out, three-run double by Jacob Derouen was all the Bulldogs needed as four relief pitchers combined for 7.0 scoreless innings to lead Louisiana Tech (24-26, 7-11 WAC) to a 5-2 victory over Fresno State (25-25, 8-10 WAC) on Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field.

Derouen's three-run double were the first runs batted in for the redshirt freshman this season and the bullpen allowed just two hits in Tech's first road conference win of the season.

Chris Sadberry pitched two innings in Tech's regular season finale, striking out one and allowing just one base runner, who reached on an error. Dakota Doss struck out one hitter in 1.0 inning of work. Sam Alvis pitched 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and forced Fresno State to strand the bases loaded to end the seventh inning and preserve a 4-2 lead for the Bulldogs. Caleb Dudley entered the game with one out in the eighth and shut the door for his ninth save of the season.

UNLV 8, Sacramento State 7 (11)

SACRAMENTO--(Sacramento State Media Relations) On Sunday against UNLV, the Hornets celebrated the accomplishments of seniors Derrick Chung, Trevor Paine, Brent Hottman, Hunter Adrian and R.J. Davis. The Hornets scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings, but UNLV broke through with two in the top of the 11th and Sacramento State could only muster one run in the bottom half of the inning.

Paine went 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBIs while eight other Hornets had one hit. Davis (1-1) took the loss after allowing both runs in the 11th while UNLV reliever Buddy Borden earned the win and Joe Robinson secured the save.
