RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech's Jim Mize Track Facility will showcase some of the world's top athletes when Tech hosts the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 12-15.
The WAC Championship meet will host five athletes and two relays that are currently ranked in the world rankings maintained by the IAAF, the international governing body for track and field.
The highest ranked athlete to compete at LA Tech's Jim Mize Track Facility at the WAC Championships will be Hawaii's Amber Kaufman. Kaufman is ranked sixth in the world in the high jump with a mark of 6' 3.25". Kaufman is set to compete in the women's high jump at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15.
Louisiana Tech's Antoinette Cobb is in the international rankings in three separate events. In her signature event, the 100m hurdles, the Weyanoke, La. native is ranked 35th in the nation with a school record time of 13.22. She will be challenged by Idaho's Christie Gordon, who is ranked 60th in the world in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.34. Fans attending the WAC Championships can see Cobb and Gordon vie for WAC supremacy in the hurdles with the prelims set to run at 4:05 p.m. on Friday, May 14.
Cobb is also ranked 35th in the world rankings in the 4x100m relay along with teammates Rakeisha GreenChasidee Lewis-Baker and Quanisha Sales. The quartet ran a mark of 44.83 earlier this year and will compete in the 4x100m relay at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 15.
Two members of that 4x100m relay team - Cobb and Sales - are ranked in the 200m dash. Cobb is ranked 54th in the world with a wind-aided mark of 23.26 while Sales is ranked 31st in the world with a wind-aided time of 23.12. Sales, who was named the WAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in February, won the WAC title in the 200m during the indoor meet and the freshman from Nashville, Tenn. will challenge Cobb and the rest of the league for the 200m title beginning with the prelims on Friday, May 14 at 7:10 p.m.
Boise State's Maria-Elena Kafourou is ranked 38th in the world in the long jump and will be challenged by Tech's Quatisha Williams and Chelsea Hayes when the women's long jump competition gets underway on Friday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m.
Tech's 4x400m relay team - comprised of Kamelia StroyMonique WrightLashannda Worthy and Shante Benion - is currently ranked 31st in the world and will run at 7:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 15 in the meet's final meet.
Louisiana Tech is hosting the WAC Track and Field Championships for the first time in program history with the Lady Techsters challenging for their sixth consecutive outdoor title and a WAC Championship for the 11th time in 12 years including indoor and outdoor seasons.
The WAC Championships start with the heptathlon and decathlon competitions starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12 and continuing at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 13. Individual field events start on Friday, May 14 at 12:30 with running events beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
Tickets for the WAC Track and Field Championships can be purchased at the Louisiana Tech Ticket Office, by calling (318) 257-3631 or by e-mailing techtickets@latech.edu with all-session passes available for $25. Friday and Saturday only passes are on sale for $15 while single day passes for adults are only $5. Kids 12 and under and college students receive free admission with a student ID. Parking is free and will be available on the north end of the Jim Mize Track and Field Complex and in the parking lots around Joe Aillet Stadium.
